Sustainability is an approach that aims to protect natural resources and ecosystems while meeting today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
Sustainability has three main components:
Environmental sustainability: protecting natural resources, maintaining healthy ecosystems and preserving biodiversity.
Economic sustainability: ensuring that economic growth is sustainable in the long term without depleting resources or causing environmental and social harm.
Social sustainability: ensuring the sustainability of the social fabric by improving the well-being of society, promoting social equity and respecting human rights.
These three components are regarded as complementary elements in building a sustainable future.
