What is Contract asset and contract liability?

A contract asset is an entity's right to consideration for goods or services transferred to a customer that is not yet unconditional; a contract liability is an obligation for which consideration has been received but not yet performed.

In work performed over time, such as construction and software projects, differences between billing and revenue are tracked in these items. When the right to consideration becomes unconditional, it becomes a trade receivable.
